Ithaca Advances in NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament with 1-0 Win Over Previsouly Undefeated Wheaton

Norton, Mass. – The Ithaca women's soccer team (18-3-0) posted a 1-0 win at previously unbeaten Wheaton (Mass.) in Saturday's NCAA regional final. Sophomore midfielder Amy Scheffer (Schenectady/Schalmont) scored the game-winner in the 41st minute, as she placed a shot into the upper right corner from outside the penalty box. The goal was her seventh of the season and gives her 22 points on the year.

Sophomore forward Winnie Adrien (Blair Academy/Selden) almost gave the Ithaca the lead early on, hitting the crossbar from 25 yards out eighteen minutes into the game.

Senior goalie Aimee Meachem (Massena/Massena) finished with eight saves, earning the shutout victory. The shutout marks the 15th of the season, which Ithaca's highest ever total under coach Mindy Quigg. It is also the most in team history since the 1993 season, when the team also posted 15 shutouts.

The Bombers improve to 18-3 on the season; their 18 wins are the most in a season since the 1991 team won a school-record 19 games. The Bombers are currently ranked 24th in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America; the Lyons, who finish 22-1-1, were ranked seventh.

Ithaca will face Wittenberg next weekend in in one semifinal of a four-team sectional, with the date, time and host school to be determined. the sectional will also include Messiah and the winner of Sunday's regional final between Virginia Wesleyan and York (Pa.).
