St. John Fisher College has named Marianne O’Connor Ermi ’85 as head coach of its women’s basketball program. Ermi was named as the interim head coach back in November and led the Cardinals to their fourth overall ECAC Upstate Championship title and their third this decade. Freshman center Sharon Dennis of the RIT women's basketball team, was named the 2009 d3hoops.com East Region Rookie of the Year on Thursday. Dennis also earned All-East Region second team accolades. Ithaca College (13-3 conference, 17-8 overall) defeated Rochester Institute of Technology 80-59 to clinch the top seed for the upcoming Empire 8 Women's Basketball Championship. The Bombers will host fourth-seeded St. John Fisher College in the first semifinal Friday at 6 p.m. with second-seeded Utica College facing third-seeded Stevens Institute of Technology in the second semifinal at 8 p.m. The final will be Saturday at 7 p.m.

The Ithaca women's basketball team was one of hundreds of teams nationwide that particpated in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's Think Pink effort, designed to raise breast cancer awareness. the Bombers wore pink warm-up shirts for their wins over St. John Fisher and Elmira for the WBCA iniative, which is in its second year.
On Sunday, September 30, Head Coach Jon Hochberg and 15 members of the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s basketball team took part in the Tunnel to Towers 5K Run/Walk in honor of Stephen Siller – a firefighter who was tragically killed on September 11, 2001 as he attempted to save lives from the World Trade Center.
