Empire 8 Player of the Year Jessica Berry was limited to four points, but her buzzer-beating layup gave third-seeded Utica College a 38-37 win over top-seeded Ithaca College in the title game of the Empire 8 Women's Basketball Championship. Berry added 11 rebounds after a 26-point, nine-rebound effort in the semifinals and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Ithaca to Host Empire 8 Women's Basketball Championship This Weekend
Ithaca College, which completed the first 16-0 season in conference history in any sport, will host the Empire 8 Women's Basketball Championship on Friday and Saturday. The top-seeded Bombers will face fourth-seeded St. John Fisher in Friday's first semifinal at 6 p.m. The second semifinal at 8 p.m. pits the past two Empire 8 champions against one another as second-seeded Stevens Institute of Technology plays third-seeded Utica College. The teams split home wins during the regular season. The semifinal winners will meet at 3 p.m. on Saturday to determine the conference champion and automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship.
Ithaca Women's Basketball Completes First 16-0 Conference Record in Empire 8 History
The Ithaca women's basketball team (21-4, 16-0 Empire 8) closed out the regular season with a 58-48 win at Stevens (14-9, 10-4 Empire 8). With the win -- their school-record 16th straight -- the Bombers wrapped up the first 16-0 Empire 8 record in any sport.
