NEWARK, N.J. (October 10, 2010)Ashley Princiotta finished ninth at the New Jersey Institute of Technology’s 5k Highlander Invitational despite taking a nasty fall over a dangerous pile of rocks to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s cross country team to a second place finish among Division III institutions in Branch Brook Park in Newark on Sunday. Laura Barito finished less than six seconds behind Princiotta for 11th place (20:37).

Laura Lemke knocked 60 seconds off her previous 5k time to finish 15th at 21:15. Katie Castroaugudin, competing in just her second race, posted a time of 21:40, over two minutes faster than her first race. She finished 16th.

Carolyn Brady was the final Stevens scorer with a time of 22:43, good for 18th place in the field of over 125 runners.

In addition to the team’s success, some Duck alumnae competed in the event and did quite well. Salme Cook finished fifth overall at 19:19.  Shanna Bearisto was 10th (20:09) and Jamie Brabston was in 15th place in 20:27.

“I think we had a pretty remarkable day today,” said head coach John Crawford. “Especially when you consider we were without Kelly Freed, who’s out with an injury. It was the best team effort we have had all year and I think it’s a sign of good things to come at the CTC’s next week.”
