Cristina Nunez Wins First Singles Title at State Tournament

Ithaca, N.Y. - Sophomore Cristina Nunez (Morris Hills/Rockaway, N.J.) captured the first singles title at the 2010 New York State Division III Women's Tennis Championships with a 6-3, 6-1 victory Sunday morning. Nunez defeated the tournament's top-seeded player, Lia Weiner of Rochester. Weiner finished the 2009-10 season ranked 17th nationally in singles by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, while Nunez was ranked 44th at the end of last season.

Nunez is now 15-1 in singles play this season.

Ithaca also advanced two doubles teams to play Sunday at the state tournament, and were eliminated in the semifinal round. Cristina Nunez and senior Melissa Nunez (Morris Hills/Rockaway, N.J.) were in the first doubles semifinals and sophomore Laurel Salladay (Pinkerton Academy/Hampstead, N.H.) and sophomore Allison Young (Prout School/Newport, R.I.) were in the third doubles semifinals.
