Chamberlain's Goal Gives Stevens Overtime Win over Hartwick
HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 2, 2010) – Freshman Caitlin Chamberlain scored 5:43 into overtime to lift the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team to a 1-0 win over Empire 8 rival Hartwick College on a sunny Saturday afternoon at the De Baun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, N.J. Stevens, who dominated the game from start to finish, improves to 2-1 in the Empire 8 and 3-7 overall, while the Hawks drop to 2-7 and 1-2 in the conference.
Stevens controlled the opening half, applying pressure deep in the Hawk zone for more than 75 percent of the action. The Ducks ended the stanza with a 7-2 edge in shots and took eight corners compared to just two for Hartwick.
The Ducks had numerous chances in front but the best came off of their fifth corner with 12:30 left in the half. Senior Karen Federico controlled the hit off the corner and passed left to junior Jillian Price who shot across the goal and missed inches wide of the right post.
The Ducks continued to force the issue and possess the ball deep in the Hartwick zone over the first five minutes of the second half, generating five penalty corners in a span of less than two minutes. Stevens was able to take four quality shots from those corners but ‘Wick goalkeeper Mackenzie Chapman (Niskayuna, N.Y.) was up to the task, making three saves.
The game never changed as Stevens kept the ball in the Hartwick zone the entire second half, earning 11 corners and taking nine shots.
Hartwick was able to get off a strong opportunity late in regulation when sophomore forward Kelsey Kimble (Dingmans Ferry, Pa.) carried into the striking circle and fired a shot at the left corner that appeared to be headed in but Duck goalkeeper Ellyn Griggs made a spectacular save to keep the game tied.
In overtime, the Ducks continued to press, generating four corners and four shots early in the extra period. Following a Stevens corner, Hartwick was able to push out on a 2-on-1 breakaway. Griggs played it aggressively, cut down the angle, and broke up the promising chance for the Hawks.
Moments later, Stevens was back in the Hartwick zone threatening. Eventually, a foul was called on Hartwick and junior captain Mallory Swanson carried into the circle and put a shot on goal. The initial shot was saved but the ball bounced to Chamberlain who was charging in from the right side and the freshman put home the game-winner in thrilling fashion. It was her team-high third goal of the season.
Griggs earned her first shutout of 2010, making five saves. Chapman took the loss, stopping 11 Duck shots. Stevens ended the game with a 22-8 edge in shots and a remarkable 23-5 advantage in corners.
