W&J Takes Over Top Spot With 6-0 Victory over Elmira
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson scored four times in the opening 14 minutes and earned a 6-0 Empire 8 Conference field hockey victory over Elmira Saturday afternoon at Cameron Stadium.
The Presidents (5-2, 2-0) are tied with Utica (4-4, 2-0) atop the league standings. Elmira's record dropped to 0-8 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
W&J scored 6:16 into the match as senior forward Kim Marcius (Westmoreland City, Pa./Norwin) scored off a pass from senior midfielder Julianne Zackey (Easton, Pa./Moravian Academy).
Zackey added her own goal two minutes later after redirecting home classmate Kolbey Seidel's (Oley, Pa./Exter) pass.
Sophomore forward Jennifer Marabella (Sinking Spring, Pa./Holy Name) upped the lead to 4-0 with a pair of goals 81 seconds apart. Zackey assisted on the first tally, while sophomore Erin Barno (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) dished out the assist on Marabella's second goal. Marabella collected her third-straight, two-goal game.
Freshman forward Alexandra Kania (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) closed the first-half scoring with a goal at the 22:07 mark. Marcius proivided the assist.
The only goal of the second half came three minutes into the second half as freshman forward Catherine Villa (Poway, Calif./Poway) scored off a feed from sophomore forward Amanda Pflumm (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River).
Juniors Shelby Colyer (Oxford, Ohio/Talawanda) and Roslynn Reynoso (Fallbrook, Calif./Fallbrook Union) split time in net and combined for four saves. Lauren Thomas allowed all six goals for the Soaring Eagles in just over 51 minutes of action.
