Elmira, NY – Elmira Women’s Soccer earned its first Empire 8 win of the season as they defeated the Pioneers of Utica College 7-0. Elmira opened the first half on a goal from second year standout Kelsey Kiel ’13 (Bryn Athyn, PA -- Academy of the New Church) at the 21:21 mark. Kiel made a run through the middle of the field on a great through-ball by first year player Janine Swanson ’14 (Rochester, NY -- Nazareth Academy). Kiel was able to beat the goalie on the right side for the score. With a 1-0 lead Emily Kelly ’14 (Rochester, NY -- Nazareth Academy) would add some cushion as she would make a great play by the goal to chip the ball over the keeper’s head for a score. Elmira would hold-on to the 2-0 lead going into the second half.
Just eight minutes into the second half, Mary Corey ’12 (Niskayuna, NY -- Niskayuna) would end any thoughts of a Utica comeback as she would bury a free kick for a goal from 35 yards out. With the three goal lead Elmira did not back down as they would go on to score three more goals within three minutes of each other.
Kelsie DeKarski ’14 (Marshfield, MA -- Marshfield) would find the back of the net on a blast into the right upper 90. Erin Pruess ’12 (Glens Falls, NY -- Glens Falls) would assist on the goal. Caitlyn Criscuolo ’14 (Cheshire, CT -- Cheshire) would register Elmira’s 5th goal as she would rip a shot past the keeper on a rebounded shot by Kiel. Just two minutes past the Criscuolo goal, Kiel would bury her second of the game as she beat the keeper to the right corner on a shot from the 18. This goal would give Kiel 5 points on the day.
With thirty seconds left on the clock, second year forward Kristyn O’Rourke ’13 (Beaver Dams, NY -- Corning East) would score on a one-on-one opportunity with the keeper, giving Elmira their 7th goal of the contest.
