Utica, N.Y.
Utica, N.Y. (10/20/10) – The Utica College men’s soccer team broke the school-record for wins in a single season Wednesday night after a convincing 5-0 victory over visiting Cobleskill. Senior David Garcia and junior Jonathon Wood each netted two goals, while sophomore Brett Darrow added two assists for the Pioneers (11-4-1).
UC returns to Empire 8 Conference action on senior night Saturday as the Pioneers take on St. John Fisher College at 7 p.m. They close out regular season play next weekend when they travel to nationally-ranked No. 3 Stevens Institute of Technology for an E8 contest. Utica can clinch a spot in the coveted Empire 8 Conference Tournament with two wins and one RIT loss or two losses by either Stevens, Nazareth or Elmira.
UC outshot the visitors 26-2 on the day en route to eclipsing the school-record for wins set by the 2007 edition of the Pioneers.
Garcia opened the scoring with his fifth goal of the season just 6:06 into the contest when he tipped in the first goal of the game off a throw-in from Darrow. Wood gave UC a 2-0 lead over 11 minutes later when he tallied his second goal of the season after heading home a beautifully placed cross from Darrow.
Less than one minute later Garcia added the Pioneers’ third goal of the night after a crossing pass from senior Roberto Sgueglia. Sgueglia, who ranks third in the nation in points per game, extended the school’s single-season scoring record with his 36th point of the season.
Wood opened the second half scoring when he tallied his third goal of the season in the 55th minute after a lead pass from senior Kyle Tassone to give the Pioneers’ a 4-0 lead. Freshman Alec Choleva added an insurance goal, the first of his career, in the 82nd minute. Sophomore Jeff Konieczny assisted on the game’s final goal.
Freshman Anthony Caruso totaled his tenth collegiate victory in net after posting two saves, while his counterpart, Mack Curran, totaled 11 saves in net for the Fighting Tigers.
