Stevens Men's Swimming Rolls to Win at NYU Fall Invitational

NEW YORK, N.Y. (October 23, 2010) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men’s swimming team won the New York University Fall Invitational over NYU and SUNY Cortland on Saturday. The Ducks dominated the entire event, racking up 978 team points compared to just 581 for the Violets and 408 for Cortland. Sophomore standout John Hu recorded his second NCAA B-cut in as many days and Stevens took the top-four places in two different events to highlight a exceptional performance by the Ducks. The Stevens relays were amazing on Friday night and that continued Saturday as the Ducks took first and third in the 200-yard medley relay. Sophomore Greg Charriez, senior captain Matthew Preedy, sophomore Daniel Munt, and freshman Tyler Hessler carded a 1:37.70 in placing first, while freshman Shawn Hanak, freshman Jonathan Wang, junior Matthew Smith, and junior Carl Nagle took third with a 1:40.35. Sophomore Alex Benham won the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:59.84 and rookie Conor Arcuri was second (10:23.32). Sophomore Luke Niezelski was fourth in the event, turning in a time of 10:36.37. Senior captain Daniel Pecoraro, sophomore Derek Smith, and Arcuri went one-two-three in the 200-yard freestyle with times of 1:45.17, 1:46.79, and 1:48.18, respectively, while Charriez and Hanak took first and third in the 100-yard backstroke. Charriez clocked a 53.80, Hanak finished with a 55.04, and freshman Henry Hernandez was fourth with a 56.59. Wang won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 58.49 and Preedy placed second with a 58.65. Hu’s B-cut came in the 200-yard butterfly as the second-year swimmer turned in a 1:53.41 in winning the event. Senior Evan Wilson was second, touching at 1:58.98, and Matthew Smith placed third with a 2:02.23. Hessler won the 50-yard freestyle with a 22.09 and Nagle took second, carding a 22.41. Hessler won again in the 100-free, touching the wall at 48.76 and Derek Smith took second in that event with a 49.35. Pecoraro and Hu were one-two in the 200-yard backstroke (1:58.16, 1:58.27), while Wilson, Wang, and freshman Brian Ginebaugh went two-three-four in the 200-yard breaststroke recording times of 2:16.05, 2:16.12, and 2:19.09, respectively. Benham, Arcuri, Pecoraro, and freshman Nick Noga swept the top four in the 500 yard freestyle (4:47.69, 4:50.06, 4:51.98, 4:55.84) and Charriez, Munt, Hernandez, and Matthew Smith did the same thing in the 100-yard butterfly (54.71, 54.74, 55.31, 55.53). The Ducks took one-two-four in the 200-yard individual medley as Hu won with a 1:57.27, Wilson placed second (2:00.37), and Charriez was fourth (2:04.51). In the last race of the day, the 400-yard freestyle relay, Stevens squads took first and second. Pecoraro, Hessler, Hu, and Preedy carded a 3:13.75 in placing first, and Benham, freshman Joseph Huyett, Derek Smith, and Wilson finished in second with a 3:19.03.
