Schuckers, Chew Propel No. 19th-ranked Ducks

ONEONTA, N.Y. (October 23, 2010) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women’s soccer team netted a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes – including the game-winner with just nine seconds remaining, to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 victory over Empire 8 foe Hartwick College at Elmore Field in Oneonta, N.Y. With the victory, the Ducks, ranked 19th on the latest NSCAA/HendrickCars.com top-25 poll and 22nd in the D3Soccer.com national rankings, improve d to 14-2-1 overall on the season, with a 5-2-0 league ledger, while the Hawks fell to 5-8-2 on the year with a 2-4-2 mark against league opponents. Firing a pair of shots in the first seven minutes of action, Hartwick tested Stevens’ junior goalkeeper Kaitlin McClymont early, beating the Corpus Christi, Texas native in the seventh minute on Julie Kessler’s go-ahead goal at the 6:31 mark. The Hartwick junior back put a left-footed volley on a cross from the edge of the 18-yard box into the top corner of the Ducks’ net staking the Hawks to a 1-0 lead. Stevens freshman Becky Wos sent the Ducks’ first shot of the afternoon high in the 10th minute, before Sarah Lehman put Stevens’ first shot on net at 10:43. Hoping to net an insurance goal, Hartwick outshot the Ducks 3-0 over the next 20 minutes of play, but McClymont smothered a pair of tries destined for the Duck goal to keep it a one-goal game. Senior Mary Chew would record a pair of shots just before the break, but either found the back of the Hartwick net as Stevens found itself down 1-0 entering the half. Looking to notch the equalizer, Stevens fired seven shots over the first 10 minutes of the second frame. Continuing to push forward junior Kathleen Schuckers put a shot on net just after the 76th minute, but Hartwick junior goalkeeper Alyssa Rondo turned the forward away to keep the Hawks up one. Chew again tested the Saco, Maine native in the 79th minute but the Hartwick netminder was again up to the challenge, punching away the shot. Undaunted, Chew put another try on net moments later, this time tallying her fourth goal in two games to knot the score at one. Finding herself in a one-on-one situation on the right side, Schuckers slipped her defender, racing toward the endline before launching a cross across the face of the six-yard box where Chew footed the volley into the roof of the Hawks’ netting. With time winding down, Schuckers again made something out of nothing, beating out Rondo to a long Wos pass down the middle of the pitch before sliding the game-winner into the back of the Hartwick net with just nine seconds remaining.
