Stevens Women's Swimming Wins NYU Fall Invitational
NEW YORK, N.Y. (October 23, 2010) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women’s swimming team won the New York University Fall Invitational on Saturday over NYU and SUNY Cortland with a team total of 806 points. The Ducks won 4-of-4 relays at the invitational as NYU came in second with 716 team points and Cortland was third (414).
Senior Gabrielle Czernik, sophomore Marissa Douglas, freshman Louise Moores, and senior Laura Barito won the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:51.07 to open the day, and senior captain Amanda Nauman and sophomore Victoria Baldwin placed second and third in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:03.32, 11:05.24) in the second event of the afternoon.
Junior Sian Pearson and Barito were second and third in the 200-yard freestyle, clocking 1:58.30 and 1:58.38, respectively, while Moores and fellow freshman Megan Lisbon went one-two in the 100-yard backstroke (59.32, 1:02.26).
Czernik carded a 1:11.79 in placing second in the 100-yard breaststroke as Pearson and Nauman finished first and second in the 200-yard butterfly. Pearson turned in a 2:11.81 and Nauman finished with a 2:18.19. Barito and junior Hayley Hatfield were first and third in the 50-yard freestyle (24.32, 25.91), while Barito and Moores finished one-two in the 100-yard freestyle, clocking times of 52.94 and 53.95, respectively. Hatfield placed fourth with a 56.23.
Lisbon won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:11.11 and Douglas took second, touching the wall and 2:19.52. Czernik earned a win in the 200-yard breaststroke with a 2:33.21, while Pearson took the top spot in the 500-yard freestyle with a 5:14.29.
Moores, Czernik, and Pearson swept the top-three spots in the 100-yard butterfly. Moores turned in a 59.39, Czernik finished with a 1:01.39, and Pearson touched at 1:02.21. Douglas was first in the 200-yard individual medley, swimming a 2:14.56, and Lisbon placed third with a 2:17.38. Sophomore Natalie Fitz was fourth (2:21.88).
In the final event of the day, Douglas, Pearson, Fitz, and Barito teamed to take first in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:39.32, almost four full seconds better than the second-place team.
Stevens placed first in all four relays which netted the team 128 points.
