ROCHESTER, N.Y. (October 2, 2010) – Reigning Empire 8 Player of the Year Nolan Sandberg scored four goals as the fifth-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology men’s soccer team stopped Empire 8 rival Nazareth College, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon at Golden Flyer Stadium in Rochester, N.Y. The win moves the Ducks to 7-0-2 overall and 2-0-1 in the Empire 8. Stevens has now not allowed a goal in nine games this season and 12 games overall.
Sandberg put the Ducks on top 1-0 at the 26:31 mark with his fifth goal of the season and they went into the locker room with that lead. Stevens ended the half with an 11-9 edge in shots but was out-cornered 8-3.
Stevens essentially sealed the win 12:25 into the second half with a pretty goal that displayed some precision passing. Freshman back Leonardo Casas brought the ball into the Naz zone on the left side and found sophomore Victor Daza outside the box. Daza received the ball, darted to his right, and slipped a perfect pass between two defenders to a cutting Sandberg who did the rest for the goal.
As it did in its win against Fisher on September 25, Stevens scored again quickly. This time is was 43 ticks later and again, it was Sandberg and Daza hooking up for the score.
Sandberg’s fourth of the afternoon came on a penalty kick at 72:56. It was his eighth goal of the year to go along with two assists. The Ducks ended the game with a 23-19 shot advantage and Nazareth took 10 corners compared to six for Stevens.
The Stevens scoreless streak for 2010 is now at 856:19 and the Ducks have not allowed a goal in 12-straight games dating back to November 8, 2009 when they defeated Nazareth in the Empire 8 title game, 2-1. Carr, who made seven saves on Sunday, has been in goal for all 12 shutouts and the 1,146:19 of scoreless soccer is third in NCAA Division III history.
Going into the weekend, Stevens and Middlebury College were the only two teams in the nation to not have allowed a goal against this season, but Middlebury fell to Colby on Saturday, 2-1.
