Pool Record Falls in Ithaca Men's Victory Over Rensselaer
ITHACA, N.Y. - The Ithaca men's swimming & diving team (2-0) defeated Rensselaer (1-1) 192-108 Saturday at Hill Center Pool. The Bombers set a pool record in the 200 freestyle relay, capturing the meet's final event with a time of 1:27.51. The record-setting relay was comprised of freshman Jonathan Wheeler (Acton-Boxborough/Acton, Mass.), freshman Zack Kundel (Bethlehem/Glenmont), junior Antoine Connors (Spartanburg/Spartanburg, S.C.) and sophomore Jake Robbins (Fairport/Fairport).
Ithaca started the meet with victory in the 400-yard medley relay in 3:37.84 behind the efforts of junior Jeff Rapp (Liverpool/Liverpool), sophomore Jake Lichter (Weston/Weston, Mass.), freshman Taylor Van Cott (Bethlehem/Delmar) and Connors. All four of those swimmers also went on to win individual events.
Rapp won the 200-yard backstroke in 2:02.36 and the 200-yard individual medley in 2:03.68. Lichter touched first in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:01.77. Van Cott won both butterfly events, capturing the 200 fly in 2:01.50 and the 100 fly in 53.81 seconds. Connor won the 50 free in 21.67 seconds and backed that up with a win in the 100 free in 49.09 seconds.
Other individual event winners for Ithaca included freshman Connor White (Fox Lane/Pound Ridge) in the 100-yard backstroke in 54.84 seconds, freshman John Carr (Brewster/Brewster) in the 500 free in 5:09.34 and freshman Cheffy Thomas (Carmel/Carmel, Ind.) in the 200 breast in 2:19.61.
