Two Stevens Doubles Teams Reach ITA Quarterfinals
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (October 3, 2010) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men’s tennis team put forth a solid showing at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Championships hosted by Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., placing a pair of teams into the quarterfinal round of the doubles tournament.
Senior Jason Ringstad and freshman Lopburi Sasinin defeated The College of New Jersey’s Steven Fernandez (West Windsor, N.J.) and Howard Telson (Edison, N.J.), 8-6, to open the tournament before besting Vassar’s Max Willner (Bronx, N.Y.) and Dan Freeman (Big Flats, N.Y.), 8-6. Skidmore’s Spencer Cheng (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) and Jimmy Sherpa (West Vancouver, B.C.) finally put a end to the duos’ run with an 8-1 win in the quarterfinal round.
The Ducks’ doubles pairing of Arik Zeevy and Chris Rosensteel also put forth a strong showing in Saratoga Springs, defeating the University of Rochester’s Daniel Barbash (Old Tappan, N.J.) and Yoni Zuckerman (Rochester, N.Y.), 8-4, in the opening round before defeating the Brewers’ Joshua Jasso (Olmito, Texas) and Nick Jasso (Olmito, Texas), 9-8 (4). Zeevy and Rosensteel’s bid for a championship match berth came to an in the quarters, with the duo falling to the Lions’ Jeremy Eckhardt (Belle Mead, N.J.) and T.J. Riley (Mount Laurel, N.J.), 9-7.
Rosensteel led Stevens in singles play, putting together an impressive run to the tournament quarterfinals. The sophomore standout swept Drew’s Adam Gerber (Montclair, N.J.), 6-0, 6-0, to open the tournament before defeating Rochester’s Boris Borovcanin (Williamsville, N.Y.), 6-4, 6-4. Rosensteel then defeated Fernandez 6-2, 6-3, before dropping a hard-fought 7-5, 2-6, 7-5, match to Skidmore’s Oliver Loutsenko (Bellmore, N.Y.).
Ringstad opened the singles tournament with a 6-1, 6-1, win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s Andre Vorbrodt (Allendale, N.J.) before losing to TCNJ’s Jonathan Yu (Hamilton Square, N.J.) 6-2, 7-6 (4). In other singles action, Zeevy dropped an opening round match-up with Skidmore’s Yahia Imam (Cairo, Egypt), 6-4, 6-1, while Sasinin fell to the Thoroughbreds Alex Fromson (7-5, 6-2).
