HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 3, 2010) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women’s tennis team won its eighth-consecutive dual-match with a 9-0 sweep of Empire 8 rival Hartwick College at the Stevens Tennis Courts in Hoboken, N.J. The Ducks, moved to 9-1 on the season with a 5-1 league ledger, while the Hawks fell to 4-5 on the year with a 3-4 record against conference opponents.
Stevens’ Allyson Kingman and Nicole Portner got the Ducks off on the right foot scoring an 8-2 first doubles victory before senior Kendra Appleheimer and freshman Lisa Tessitore put Stevens up 2-0 with a 8-0 sweep at second doubles. The Ducks’ Morgan Scalzi and Mine Bese rounded out doubles play with an 8-6 victory in the third slot.
Kingman headlined singles action with a decisive 6-0, 6-1 win in the top spot, before Appleheimer and Portner sealed Stevens’ match-win with victories in fourth and third singles, respectively. Bese kept things rolling with a 6-1, 6-2, triumph at No. 5 singles, while sophomore Alexandra Handel notched a 6-3, 7-6 (7-1), win at No. 6 singles. Tessitore completed the sweep with a hard-fought 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) triumph in No. 2 singles.
Stevens returns to action on October 9-10 against Elmira College and Ithaca College.
