ITHACA, N.Y. -- David Ahonen (Victor/Farmington), a graduate student, has been named a semifinalist for the 2010 William V. Campbell Trophy (formerly known as the Draddy Trophy), as chosen by the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame. Ahonen, a strong safety, was one of just 27 players from Division III selected.
Nominees must be in their final year of eligibility (senior or graduate student), have a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship. The NFF Awards Committee will select up to 15 finalists to be announced later this month.
A starter in four of Ithaca's five games this year and 23 games in his career, Ahonen has recorded 19 tackles on the season with a pair of pass break-ups. He's a three-year starter who has collected 152 tackles, five interceptions and five interceptions. Ahonen was named to the Empire 8 all-star team in 2008 and 2009.
Ahonen is also a member of Ithaca's baseball team, earning all-conference and all-region recognition as a third baseman all three seasons.
