HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 6, 2010) – The Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team defeated Drew University, 3-0, on Wednesday night at the De Baun Athletic Complex, snapping the Rangers’ seven game winning streak and starting one of its own. The Ducks shutout their second consecutive opponent and improve to 4-7 on the year with the victory. Junior Jillian Price, junior captain Mallory Swanson and freshman Grace Ridge tallied the Stevens goals, and senior goalkeeper Ellyn Griggs made three saves in earning her second shutout of the season.
The first 10 minutes of action saw a lot of back and forth and the two teams used the whole field of play as Stevens was able to generate one shot and one corner. Stevens (4-7 overall, 2-1 Empire 8) started to control the ball, field position and tempo as the half progressed and Drew (8-2 overall, 2-0 Landmark) was not able to take a shot for the first 26:30 of the contest.
The Ducks lit up the scoreboard with 19 seconds left in the first half thanks to a breakaway goal from Price. They pushed out of their zone and forward Rachel Chavez (Oceanport, N.J.) was able to dribble the ball into the Drew zone. The freshman found Price who was able to put a shot past goalkeeper Christiana Carlini (Amherst, N.H.) for her second goal of the season. The assist for Chavez was her first career point.
The Ducks went into the half with the 1-0 lead. They outshot Drew 5-3 and generated six penalty corners compared to two for the Rangers.
Stevens continued to dominate the ball and field position in the second half, constantly attacking the Drew goal and creating quality scoring opportunities.
Swanson made it a 2-0 game 6:10 into the second half with her third goal of the season. Sophomore back Sam Weisman carried into the striking circle and ripped a shot that freshman Caitlin Chamberlain was able to deflect to Swanson in front for the score. It was Chamberlain's first assist of her career.
Ridge put the game away 10:48 later with the first goal of her career after a penalty corner. The rookie ripped a shot into the right corner of the cage from the left side.
Stevens outshot the Rangers 11-4 for the game and 6-1 in the second stanza. The Ducks also ended the contest with an 11-2 advantage in penalty corners.
Griggs made three saves to earn her second shutout of the year, while Carlini made six stops in the loss.
