EWING, N.J. (October 6, 2010) – Junior Kaitlin McClymont made a season-high 15 saves as the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s soccer team, ranked 17th on the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/HendrickCars.com top-25 poll, earned a scoreless, 0-0, draw with No. 2 The College of New Jersey at Lions Stadium in Ewing, N.J.
TCNJ controlled much of the possession in the early going, putting three shots on the Ducks’ net over the first eight minutes of action, but McClymont smothered all three chances to preserve the scoreless tie.
In the 10th minute Lions’ sophomore forward Katie Landrigan (Rutherford, N.J.) had a chance to stake TCNJ to a 1-0 edge, receiving a Casey Caruso (East Brunswick, N.J.)through-ball from the right side in the middle of the box, but the Rutherford, N.J. native pushed the ensuing shot just over the Ducks’ crossbar.
Ten minutes later, freshman midfielder Sloan DePiero (Ramsey, N.J.) tested McClymont deflecting a long shot from the far-side toward net, but the Corpus Christi, Texas native made a diving stop to her left to keep it scoreless. DePiero very nearly connected on a volley following the ensuing TCNJ corner at 20:12, but the midfielder came up empty sending it over the goal.
In the 24th minute, TCNJ again threatened on a corner-kick with junior Annie McCarthy (Brick, N.J.) heading a shot from the back-post toward the Stevens’ net, but sophomore back Paige Allen made a defensive save at the goal-line to keep Stevens level.
The Lions continued to push forward for the rest of the half, but McClymont and the Ducks’ backline held steady, weathering a 13-3 shot deficit to take a 0-0 tie into the break.
TCNJ continued to apply much of the pressure in the second half firing the first six shots of the frame. Lions’ junior Brittany McGinley (Cranford, N.J.) put a pair of shots on net in the 61st minute, but McClymont punched away both chances to avoid any danger.
After another McClymont save on a DePiero try at 63:14, Lions’ sophomore forward Allyson Anderson (Point Pleasant, N.J.) made a nice run down the left-side before rifling a shot toward the Stevens goal, but the Point Pleasant, N.J. native put it just high and wide right of the Ducks’ net. TCNJ would fire seven more shots down the stretch, upping their total to 28, but the gritty Stevens’ defense kept it scoreless, forcing overtime.
Hoping to net the go-ahead goal, sophomore midfielder Amy Van Dyk (Wyckoff, N.J.) tested McClymont with a shot from the top of the 18-yard box less than two minutes into the extra session, but the junior netminder made a leaping grab for her 13th save of the day. Anderson put another try on goal off a free-kick from 25-yards out 97:14 but McClymont again made the stop to ensure a second overtime.
The Lions didn’t waste any time putting the first shot on the board in the second overtime period with McCarthy firing a shot high just 1:21 into the stanza. McGinley nearly notched the break-through goal in the 105th minute, but McClymont made a tremendous diving save to her right before punching the ball away before a Lion attacker could get a foot on the rebound.
TCNJ would fire one final shot in the extra period, but the Ducks held on, earning a 0-0 tie. The Lions finished with a 34-6 shot advantage and a 9-0 edge in corners. McClymont, now 9-1-1 on the year with a 0.53 goals-against-average and a 335:0 minute consecutive scoreless streak, recorded 15 saves en route to her fifth clean sheet of the season.
Senior Mary Chew and freshman Jessie Wos each tallied a pair of shots, with Wos generating the Ducks’ lone chance on net.
