ROCHESTER, NY -- Senior Erica Conte netted the game-winning goal with four minutes left in the second overtime period Saturday to lift host Nazareth to the 2-1 Empire 8 Conference victory over Stevens in women's soccer.
The Golden Flyers improve to 4-0-0 in the Empire 8 play, 7-5-0 overall, while Stevens, ranked 17th nationally by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, now sits at 2-2-0 in conference, 10-2-1 overall.
Conte's game-winner started off a throw-in deep in the Stevens end. The ball was thrown to freshman Julia Teran Pulford who crossed the ball from the right side and found Conte, who one-timed it into the net for her third goal of the season.
Nazareth got the game going offensively in the first half when Meghan Finn got a cross to the left side of the box. She then centered it to junior Kaylee Benz who shot it past the Stevens keeper on the near side. It was Benz's second goal of the season and the Golden Flyers carried a 1-0 lead into the half.
Stevens answered just four minutes into the second half. Brittany Odgers got a long ball behind the Flyer back line. Nazareth goalie Hillary Simon challenged the play. Simon was able to stop the initial attempt as both players went down, however Odgers was able to get to the rebound and score into the empty Nazareth net to level the game at 1-1.
The Golden Flyers controlled most of the game offensively. They led in shots, 20-6, and corner kicks, 8-3. Kaitlin McClymont finished the game with nine saves for Stevens with Simon had two for Nazareth.
