Stevens Increases Winning Streak to Eight Matches

CORTLAND, N.Y. (October 9, 2010) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women’s volleyball team upped its win-streak to eight matches with a pair of victories over Hunter College and SUNY Geneseo at the Cortland Invitational in Cortland, N.Y. The Ducks scored a hard-fought 3-2 (25-13, 23-25, 18-25, 25-11, 15-11) over the Hawks before sweeping the Blue Knights, 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-21). Sophomore Maggie Kowalska finished with 21 kills and six blocks in the Ducks’ pair of games, while freshman Chrissy Dickinson tallied 23 kills and 12 blocks. Stevens return to action on Wednesday, October 13 when it plays host to the City College of New York. Stevens 3, Hunter 2 (25-13, 23-25, 18-25, 25-11, 15-11) Stevens opened the match with a 25-13 first set victory before dropping two-consecutive sets to the Hawks, 23-25 and 18-25. The resilient Ducks rallied for a 25-11 fourth set victory to force a tiebreaker before capturing the decisive fifth and final set, 15-11. Dickinson paved the way for the Stevens attack, notching 13 kills and seven blocks. Kowalska added 10 kills and four blocks, while senior setter Sara Budar chipped in with 33 assists and 13 digs. Fellow senior Julia Reilly added 13 digs, while junior Amethyst Holder finished with 24 digs and 16 kills. Freshman Mikayla Floyd collected 20 digs and four kills in the win. Stevens 3, SUNY Geneseo 0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-21) The Ducks took control of the match with the Blue Knights early, notching a 25-20 first set victory. Stevens would then take set two, 25-15, before putting Geneseo away with a 25-21 triumph in the third and final frame. Kowalska and Dickinson had 11 and 10 kills, respectively, with the duo also combining for seven blocks. Floyd tallied seven kills and 13 digs in the victory.
