Chris Ryder Pours in 28 as Hartwick Pulls Away From Wells, 76-67

ONEONTA, NY - Hartwick men's basketball outscored Wells 13-6 in the final five minutes to score a 76-67 win in the season opener for both teams on Monday night at Lambros Arena. 'Wick junior forward Chris Ryder (Port Washington, NY/Port Washington) and freshman forward Jared Suderely (Newport, NY/West Canada Valley) combined for 10 points in the late run and finished as the Hawks' top scorers.

Ryder led all scorers with 28 points on 10-of-14 shooting. He added three three-pointers, six rebounds, and tied for a game-high with four assists. Suderely shot 7-of-11 from the field in his first collegiate game to end up with 17 points. He missed a double-double by a single rebound as he tied for a game-high with nine. Senior forward Martin McCann (Hopewell Junction, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) contributed 13 points and added three triples of his own.

The Express received 21 points from Mabior Mayen. He added eight rebounds. Dave Foltz scored 15 points and Terry Harrison scored nine and grabbed nine rebounds.

Ryder and Mayen both paced their teams in the opening half of play. Ryder dropped in 15 for the Hawks with Mayen notching 10 in a back and forth half that saw Hartwick emerge with a 33-28 lead at the break.

Wells jumped on the Hawks early in the second half, outscoring them 10-2 in the first two and a half minutes to grab a 38-35. Less than two minutes later, however, Hartwick regained the lead for good, 41-40, on a layup from freshman Mike Henson (Pelham, NY/Pelham Memorial). The basket sparked a 14-2 Hartwick run and the hosts appeared to be in control.

Wells hung around and cut the lead to just three points, 59-56, on a four-point play from Israel Garcia with 7:17 left and later made it a one-point game (61-60) with five and a half minutes remaining on a Harrison bucket. An Andres Carpio (Beacon, NY/Lock Haven Univ.) driving layup gave the Hawks some breathing room before Ryder and Suderely took over down the stretch.

Hartwick ended the game shooting 52.6% as a team. Wells, which hit 40.9% from the floor, out-rebounded the Hawks 43-32, which included 18 offensive boards.
