Hartwick Women's Basketball Cruises Past Wells

ONEONTA, NY - The Hartwick women's basketball team opened the 2010-11 season on Monday evening at Lambros Arena with a 67-31 rout of Wells College. All 12 Hawks made it into the scoring column and the 'Wick defense forced 31 Express turnovers in the game.

The Hawks were led by nine points apiece from freshmen Katrina Caulfield (Palmer, MA/Palmer) and Kait Veit (Easthampton, MA/Holyoke Catholic). Caulfield also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. Wells, which was making its first appearance as a Division III program, got 10 points and seven boards from Ashley Roser.

Hartwick scored the game's first nine points and jumped out to a 12-1 lead after six and a half minutes. The Hawks held leads of 20 points at three separate stages of the opening half and went into halftime up 38-18.

'Wick would outscore the Express 16-0 to start the second half and cruised by at least 30 points the rest of the way to secure the victory.

Veit scored all of her points from beyond the three-point arc as she connected on three of five shots from long range.   Lee Arduini (Albany, NY/Academy of Holy Names) added eight points for Hartwick with senior Laneka Brown (Ellenville, NY/Ellenville) and Kate Purcell (Buffalo, NY/Mount Mercy Academy) each scoring seven. Purcell also notched a game-best four steals in the contest. Maria Foglia (Rensselaer, NY/Catholic Central) and Tracey Koch (Glenmont, NY/Bethlehem) added six points each in their first collegiate games.

As a group, the Hawks shot 38% for the game and out-rebounded Wells 40-28. The Hawks netted 37 points off Express turnovers and the 'Wick bench outscored the Express reserves 38-7.
