BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- Junior Brittany Wilson scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds and junior Ashley Gallagher added 12 points and eight rebounds Saturday as Nazareth secured its first women's basketball victory of the season with a 79-61 triumph over John Jay.
The victory came in consolation game of the Brockport Tip-Off Tournament and enabled the Golden Flyers to improve to 1-2 overall. Nazareth plays at home Tuesday against Buffalo State at 6 p.m. John Jay is 0-2. Wilson, who scored 24 points in a Friday night loss to Middlebury, represented the Golden Flyers on the all-tournament team.
Nazareth controlled Saturday's game from the outset, racing to a 19-9 lead in the first seven minutes. Gallagher scored eight of her points in the opening sequence and Brittany Patenaude sank four foul shots.
Nazareth's lead continued to grow as another basket by Gallagher with 5:23 left in the half extended the advantage to 37-16. John Jay battled back to within 10, 39-29, by halftime as Jessica Lirio scored with :54 left in the half for the Bloodhounds.
Four different players sank three-point shots for Nazareth in the opening four minutes of the second half as the Golden Flyers continued to dominate. First Wilson hit from long distance, then Mary Holland, Patenaude and Erica Shaw, who scored with 16:09 left to make the score 55-33.
The lead reached 25 points, 63-38, with 13:44 left after a basket by Hillary Simon.
In addition to Wilson and Gallagher, Shaw also reached double digits with 10 points. Patenaude finished with nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Nazareth made 30 of 69 shots overall, including 10 of 22 three-pointers. Seven different players made shots from three-point range. Nazareth also enjoyed a 51-37 rebounding edge.
Lirio led all scorers with 23 points. Dominique Grice added 18 for John Jay.
