Elmira Women's Basketball Tops Penn State Altoona, 71-63

Annville, PA -- The Elmira College Soaring Eagles Women’s Basketball team earned their first win of the 2010-11 season Saturday night against Penn State Altoona in the Rinso Marquette Tournament hosted by Lebanon Valley College. With the 71-to-63 victory Elmira evens their overall record to 1-1 this season. Penn State Altoona jumped out to a quick six point advantage during the first five minutes of play, but EC would chip away at the deficit and overtook the Lions for the first time with 6:18 remaining in the half by a three point basket by Becky Peterman ’11 (Glen Gardner, NJ -- Voorhees). Elmira would go on to score the final four points in the half to enter the break up by a score of 26-to-22. Elmira College would come out in the second half on fire going on a 10-2 scoring run to maintain a twelve point advantage. However, Penn State Altoona would find their rhythm on offensive during the middle stages of the half to make the comeback and take a twelve point lead of their own with 5:52 left in the contest. The Soaring Eagles would go on a scoring outburst for the remainder of the contest scoring 28 points during the final 5:47 of the contest. Penn State Altoona was unable to keep pace with the Purple and Gold, and the game would conclude at 71-to-63 in favor of Elmira. EC was led offensively by first year player Jessica Zoltowski ’14 (Erie, PA -- Harbor Creek). Zoltowski led all scorers with 24 points for the night and also totaled 7 rebounds. Zoltowski’s clutch free throw shooting sealed the EC win as she went 11-for-12 on the night from the line. Becca Fretz ’11 (Kunkletown, PA -- Pleasant Valley) was also a main contributor for EC totaling a double-double, 18 points and 15 rebounds.
