15 Three-Pointers Lift Hartwick Women's Basketball Past Salem at Peace Tournament
RALEIGH, NC - Sixty percent of Hartwick's field goals were from three-point range on Saturday as the Hawks recovered from a disappointing loss last night in a 77-56 win over Salem College to claim the consolation prize at the Peace College Jackie Ammons Memorial Tournament in Raleigh, NC.
The Hawks knocked down 15 of their 39 attempts from behind the arc, including a College record eight triples from freshman Kait Veit (Easthampton, MA/Holyoke Catholic). Classmate Kate Purcell (Buffalo, NY/Mount Mercy Academy) earned all-tournament honors following a 12-assist performance in the game, missing the Hartwick record by just two.
Veit hit 8-for-14 from three-point range for a career-high 27 points. She added five rebounds and tied for a game-high with three steals. Freshman Samantha Fox (Hartwick, NY/Cooperstown) added her first career double-double with season-bests of 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Sophomore Jordan Nichols (Bloomville, NY/South Kortright) contributed a career-high 11 points, and Maria Foglia (Rensselaer, NY/Catholic Central) tallied nine points, seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Purcell, in addition to her 12 assists, notched eight points and six boards.
The Hawks led by as many as 10 points (17-7) seven and a half minutes into the first half of play. The Spirits would then outscore the 'Wick 20-10 over the next nine minutes to draw even 27-27 with 4:28 to go before halftime. A Nichols' three-pointer a minute later keyed a huge 18-2 spurt for the Hawks to close the half up 16 points, 45-29. Veit would hit four three-pointers in the run with Nichols contributing two.
In the second half, Hartwick led by as many as 26 with 7:04 remaining. The Hawks never led by less than 19 points and closed out the Spirits for their second win of the season.
The Hawks connected on 25-of-70 shots (35.7%) from the floor and went 12-for-16 (75%) from the free-throw line. They out-rebounded Salem, 50-40, and the Hawks won the battle of benches, 51-15.
