Stevens Field Hockey to Host Geneseo in NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship First Round
HOBOKEN, N.J. (November 8, 2010) – After winning its third Empire 8 title in as many years on Sunday, the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team learned that it will be hosting SUNY Geneseo in the first round of the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship at 3 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon at the De Baun Athletic Complex.
Stevens will come into the game with an overall record of 10-10, winning 10 of their final 15 contests this season. Geneseo will come in at 18-1. The Blue Knights are on a 17-game winning streak and is the State University of New York Athletic Conference champ.
Geneseo senior forward Michelle Milkovich (Vestal, N.Y.) leads the Blue Knights. The SUNYAC Tournament MVP has single season school marks of 15 goals, 13 assists and 43 points this season, and has Geneseo career records of 36 assists and 104 points. Classmate Stephanie Maisonet (Pine Bush, N.Y.), the program's all-time goal scorer with 36, has nine goals and three helpers for 21 points this season. The Geneseo high-powered offense includes six goals and seven assists for 19 points by senior midfielder Erin Zalewski (New Hartford, N.Y.) and eight goals by first year Katie Farley (Scotia, N.Y.). Sophomore goalie Caitlyn Dowell (Massapequa, N.Y.) and the Geneseo defensive unit of senior Rianna Travers (Penfield, N.Y.), sophomores Aly Tarney (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) and Katie Gallo (Sayville, N.Y.) and freshman Bridget McGovern (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) have allowed just 14 goals in 19 contests.
The Ducks are led by junior captain Mallory Swanson. The midfielder leads the Ducks with six goals and 14 points and she is tied for the team-lead in game-winners with three. Freshman Caitlin Chamberlain has 13 points on five goals and a team-high three assists. Sophomore Mary Nikish has four goals and two assists and has been of the Ducks’ most clutch scorers this season, netting three game-winners. Senior Lauren Griggs, junior Jillian Price, and freshman Chelsea Cresci all have two tallies apiece.
Senior captain Ellyn Griggs was named the Empire 8 Championship MVP after recording two shutouts in the tournament. She has an .804 save percentage and has stopped 111 shots this season. Senior Karen Federico, freshman Katie Achilles, and sophomore Samantha Weisman have all been solid for a Stevens defense that has allowed just one goal-against in its last three outings. Weisman leads the team with two defensive saves.
