David Ahonen Earns Academic All-America Honors
ITHACA, N.Y. -- David Ahonen (Victor/Farmington), a graduate student on the Ithaca College football team, has been named to the Academic All-America Team. Ahonen was a second-team selection at strong safety. He was the only Empire 8 player selected to 48-member team.
Ahonen advanced to the ballot for academic all-America honors after being voted to the District I first team. He is a three-time all-conference selection, earning second-team honors in 2010 and 200i9 after receiving honorable mention as a sophomore. Starting nine times at strong safety, he led Ithaca’s secondary with 54 tackles (including three for loss). He broke up two passes and was named the team’s Outstanding Back following the Alfred game. A three-year starter, Ahonen made 187 career tackles while collecting five interceptions, 17 pass break-ups and 10 tackles for loss.
He earned his bacehlor's degree in accounting in six semesters and is currently in his first semester in Ithaca's MBA program.
Ahonen is the 73rd Ithaca athlete to earn academic all-America honors including 39 (representing 15 sports) in the past 13 years. He is the 15th Bomber football program's 15th academic all-American and the first since offensive lineman Marc Hedglin in 2004.
The College Division Academic All-America Team honors student-athletes from NCAA Division II and III and NAIA Division II schools.
