Late Free Throws Lift Ithaca To Women's Basketball Win Over Nazareth
ITHACA, N.Y. - Freshman Kathryn Campbell (Wall/Spring Lake, N.J.) made a pair of free throws with 2.2 seconds remaining to give Ithaca (5-3, 2-0 Empire 8) a 61-59 win over Nazareth (3-5, 0-1 Empire 8) in an Empire 8 women's basketball game Thursday evening at Ben Light Gymnasium.
Ithaca rallied back from a six-point deficit in the second half with a 15-6 run and built a three-point lead late in the second half. Sophomore forward Devin Shea (St. Basil Academy/Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) made 7-of-10 free throws during the spurt as Ithaca worked the ball inside. Senior forward Elissa Klie (Ramapo/Wyckoff, N.J.) added two baskets in the run.
Klie's free throw with 52 seconds left gave Ithaca a 59-56 lead, but Nazareth answered with a 3-pointer with 11 seconds remaining. The Bombers pushed the ball up court and Campbell was fouled in the closing seconds before scoring the clinching points. The back-and-forth game included 15 ties, and Nazareth held a 24-23 lead at halftime.
Klie led Ithaca with 14 points and seven rebounds. Campbell added 11 points. The Bombers held Nazareth to 33.9 percent shooting from the field. Shea, junior guard Jessica Farley (Pine Valley Central/South Dayton) and junior guard Jacqueline Shinall (Joel Barlow/Redding Ridge, Conn.) each had six rebounds.
