The St. John Fisher College women’s basketball team took the lead with 15:22 left in the first half and never trailed again as the Cardinals defeated the hosting RIT Tigers 68-46 in Wendy’s College Classic action Thursday night.

Fisher took a 37-19 lead into the locker room at the half after ending on a 16-3 run over the final eight minutes. The Cardinals capitalized on RIT’s 12 turnovers, scoring 13 points off the opportunities.

The second half started off shaky for the Cardinals, with RIT going on a 9-0 run to bring it within 11 points, but a 13-3 run kicked off by seven straight points from Colleen Maloney would solidify a 19-point lead with just over 10 minutes left.

A layup from Meghan Soja with 3:31 left would give the Cardinals their largest lead of the game at 66-41. Another 12 turnovers from the Tigers in the second half benefited the Cardinals yet again, with Fisher gaining another 15 points off those opportunities.

Maloney led all scorers with 23 points, going 9-for-19 from the floor, including 4-for-9 from 3-point range. The senior also chipped in with eight rebounds and five blocks. Lauren Gustin tallied 10 points and nine rebounds for the Cardinals, while senior Stephanie Sweeney added nine points, six rebounds, and four steals.

For RIT, Anne Wapshare led the Tigers with 16 points, making good on 4-of-8 shots from 3-point land. The Tigers were out-rebounded by the Cardinals 51-45.
