Hartwick Pulls Out 68-65 Win at Oneonta
ONEONTA, NY - Hartwick men's basketball earned local bragging rights for the year on Tuesday night at Dewar Arena as the Hawks nipped Oneonta State, 68-65, scoring 12 of the last 18 points in the final 3:23 of action. Chris Ryder (Port Washington, NY/Port Washington), who led all scorers, put Hartwick up for good with a short jumper down low with 38 seconds to play. The Red Dragons attempted a three-pointer at the final buzzer that was off the mark.
With the victory, Hartwick improves to 4-3 on the season and has won two in a row. The Red Dragons fall to 1-5.
Ryder finished with 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting and added seven rebounds. Junior guard Andres Carpio (Beacon, NY/Lock Haven Univ.) and freshman forward Jared Suderley (Newport, NY/West Canada Valley) each contributed 18 point and went a combined 8-for-8 from three point range. Carpio added four assists and two steals and Suderley notched a team-best 11 rebounds.
Oneonta had five players in double figures, led by Troy Talbot's 15 points. Derek Hahn added 12 and a game-high 12 boards.
Hartwick, which trailed for the final eight minutes of the first half and much the second half, battled back from a 10-point deficit in the final period. The Hawks managed to tie the Red Dragons on five occasions in the second half but weren't able to take their first lead of the stanza until Carpio's fourth three-pointer of the night with 1:32 to play to give 'Wick a 64-63 lead.
Talbot answered with an uncontested layup at the other end to put the Red Dragons up one with 61 seconds left before Ryder's jumper in the paint made it 66-65. Oneonta let the clock wind down before Talbot missed a shot with 10 seconds left and the Hawks were awarded possession after the rebound went out of bounds.
Carpio was fouled and made both ends of a one-and-one to give the Hawks some breathing room, 68-65. Hartwick then fouled Shane Gillete with under seven ticks to go, putting him on the line for a one-and-one. He missed his free throw, but Ryan Dare grabbed the offensive board and kicked the ball to Brian Hooks for a potential game-tying three-pointer. His shot, however, caught the back iron awarding Hartwick the victory.
The Hawks were deadly from the outside in the contest, making 11 of 17 shots. The Red Dragons connected on only six of their 19 attempts. 'Wick ended the night shooting 46% as a team, including 54% in the second half, and 90% from the free-throw line.
