Zach Carr Named Top ESPN Academic All-American in Division III Men's Soccer
TOWSON, Md. (November 18, 2010) – Senior goalkeeper Zach Carr of the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s soccer team was named the top ESPN Academic All-American in the College Division on Tuesday morning. Carr is a two-time first-team Academic All-American and currently holds a cumulative grade-point average of 3.92 as a Biomedical Engineering major. In 2010, he was the top ranked goalkeeper in the nation in terms of save percentage (0.927), and his goals-against average was third at 0.287.
Carr was a first-team National College Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-American goalkeeper as a junior, the first Stevens goalie to earn that honor. As a senior, he captained the Ducks to a 15-2-3 record and their fourth-straight Empire 8 title, allowing just one goal in conference play. The top-ranked goalkeeper in NCAA Division III, Carr started all 20 games for Stevens and allowed only six goals in 1,883 minutes. He also posted a string 1,333 consecutive shutout minutes from November 8, 2009 to October 13, 2010. It was the second longest streak in NCAA soccer history across all three divisions.
A four-time all-conference selection, he set a school-record and unofficial NCAA record with 55 career shutouts, 16 coming in 2010. He notched 68 wins in goal against just nine losses and 12 draws as the Ducks’ starting goalkeeper for the last four seasons. Named first team NSCAA All-East region twice in his career, the Carmel, Indiana native had a 6-2-4 all-time record in the NCAA Tournament, with one of the losses coming in penalty kicks to Messiah College in the 2008 National Championship game. Overall, in postseason contests, Stevens was 14-2-4 with Carr between the pipes.
“Zach has been the consummate student-athlete,” Head Men’s Soccer Coach Tim O’Donohue said. “He has been a great example to the younger players in the program by showing the dedication that is necessary to excel both in the classroom and on the playing field. He’s also demonstrated excellent leadership skills throughout his career and was always one of our most coachable and respectful players.”
Carr was named to the Empire 8 Presidents’ List four times and has been a member of the Dean’s List at Stevens in all six of his previous semesters. In addition, he was on the Stevens President’s List the last two years.
Junior defender Kofi Sarkodie (Huber, Ohio) of the University of Akron was the top Academic All-American in the University Division as Sarkodie and Carr were both repeat first-team honorees.
There are only 11 men’s soccer student-athletes each year that receive first-team Academic All-America honors in the University and College divisions and each division has one top Academic All-American.
“We are extremely proud of Zach and all of his accomplishments," said Director of Athletics Russell Rogers (Branchburg, N.J.). While he was without question a standout on the soccer field for four years, Zach’s impact on the Stevens community goes far beyond his athletic excellence. He will leave behind a very special legacy on our campus that will not be forgotten.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 15,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
