Empire 8 Announces 2010 Men's Basketball All-Conference Team
ROCHESTER, NY – Senior guard Corey McAdam of Nazareth College was chosen as the Empire 8 Men’s Basketball Player of the Year as the conference named its 2010 Men’s Basketball All-Conference Team. It marked the third consecutive time he was named to the all-conference first team.
McAdam enters conference tournament play leading the conference in scoring (21.3 points per game) and free throw percentage (81.4 percent), while ranking second in assists (5.5 assists per game). He has scored nearly 1,800 career points and handed out more than 770 assists.
Senior guard Matt Newman of regular season conference champion St. John Fisher College, a second-team selection last year, was named to the all-conference first team this season. He enters the tournament averging 11.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game. Newman shot 50 percent from the field and 43.3 percent from 3-point range during the regular season.
Sophomore guard Mark Blazek of Hartwick College, the 2009 Empire 8 Rookie of the Year, received first-team all-conference recognition. He ranks second in the conference in scoring (20.3 points per game) and free throw percentage (80.8 percent), and third in three-point field goals (2.3 per game).
Junior forward Phil Barera of Ithaca College earned first-team all-conference honors after averaging 16.6 points and a conference-high 10.1 rebounds per game during the regular season. He also leads the Empire 8 and ranks fifth in NCAA Division III in field goal percentage (66.3 percent). Teammate Sean Rossi was named Empire 8 Rookie of the Year and currently leads all of Division III with 7.9 assists per game.
Junior guard Anthony Terry of Rochester Institute of Technology was named to the all-conference first team after averaging a team-high 16.2 points per game, while averaging 2.9 assists. 2.0 three-pointers, and 1.7 steals per game.
Rob Kornaker was named Coach of the Year for leading St. John Fisher to a 21-4 overall record and the top seed in the Empire 8 Men’s Basketball Championship with a 15-1 conference mark.
One member of each team was named that institution’s representative on the 2010 Men’s Basketball Sportsman of the Year Team. Empire 8 emphasizes that "Competing with Honor and Integrity" is an essential component of a student-athlete’s experience in conjunction with an institution’s educational mission. These honorees have distinguished themselves and consistently exhibit the critical traits as outstanding sportsmen.
