Northampton, Mass.--The Bombers scored 36.25 points on the second day of competition at the ECAC Championships to overtake four teams and finish first at the meet. Ithaca, which finished 38th at the 2009 ECAC meet, won its first conference title in either the indoor or outdoor season. The Bombers' 1,600-meter relay team was ECAC champion, while junior Max Orenstein (Trumbull/Trumbull, Conn.) broke his own record in the 200-meter dash.
Orenstein placed second in the 200 at 22.22, breaking the old mark of 22.28. Junior Jeff Wetmore (Bemus Point/Maple Grove) and freshman Chris Mastrosimone (Fairport/Fairport) also garnered all-ECAC honors in the event. Wetmore ran 22.68 to place fourth with Mastrosimone seventh at 22.83.
Orenstein also placed in the 55-meter dash, running 6.58 to finish seventh.
The Bombers’ 1,600-meter relay team ran 3:22.03. That relay and Ithaca’s winning 800-meter relay combined to score 20 of Ithaca’s 52.25 points.
Senior Curt Bell (Marcellus/Marcellus) ran 8:42.68 to place third in the 3,000-meter run. He finished less than two second off the winning time.
Junior Chris Stahlmann (Goshen/Goshen) and sophomore Doug Kouory (Nashoba/Stow, Mass.) were the other Bombers to earn all-ECAC honors Saturday. Stahlmann placed eighth in the high jump (1.90 meters/6-2 ¾”) and Koury placed sixth in the 400-meter dash (50.35).
Freshman Billy Savage (Indian Hills/Oakland, N.J.) and sophomore Brian McCormick (Minnechaug/Wilbraham, Mass.) both ran in the 1,000 Saturday. Savage ran 2:35.24 to place 13th with McCormick in 20th at 2:36.09.
Ithaca’s previous best showing at the ECAC Championships was fifth, most recently in 2001.
