Greencastle, Ind.--Sophomore Emma Dewart (Barker/Barker) placed second in the nation in the pentathlon at the NCAA Championships to earn her second All-America honor in two days. Her second-place finish was the best by a Bomber since 2002. Graduate student Lauren Koppel (Southside/Rockville Center) placed 16th in the pentathlon, while junior Marcia McCord (Rancocas Valley/Mount Holly, N.J.) placed 12th in the triple jump.
Dewart scored 3,494 points, 61 behind the national champion. She had the field's best high jump at 1.66 meters and was second in the 55-meter hurdles at 8.62. She also threw the shot put 9.38 meters, jumped 5.35 meters in the long jump and ran 2:30.41 in the 800.
Dewart is a two-time all-American in the pentathlon, having placed seventh in 2009. She picked up All-America honors on Friday by placing third in the high jump.
The last Bomber to place second at nationals was Amanda Laytham, who did so in the 1,500-meter run in 2002.
Koppel scored 2,951 points in the pentathlon. She had the field's fourth-best time in the 55-meter hurdles at 8.70. Koppel jumped 1.54 meters in the high jump and 4.82 meters in the long jump, threw the shot put 10.31 meters and ran 2:57.53 in the 800.
McCord, who also competed in the long jump and 400-meter dash on Friday, registered a jump of 11.02 meters (36-2").
