Ithaca Captures Second ECAC Women's Indoor Track and Field Title

Northampton, N.Y.--The women's track & field team claimed it second-ever indoor ECAC title, finishing compeition with 64.50 points. The Bombers edged the second-place team by just a half of one point. Ithaca had 10 all-ECAC performances in the two days of the meet. The Bombers also had four NCAA-qualifying performances, including one from junior Kate Leugers (Rice Memorial/Richmond, Vt.) who broke her own school record in the mile run. Sophomore Emma Dewart (Barker/Barker) was also a record-setter, setting a new team mark in the 55-meter hurdles.

Leugers ran 5:01.42, just faster than her previous record time of 5:01.45. She finished third at the meet, and is currently ranked 23rd in the nation in the mile.

Dewart placed third in the hurdles, finishing at 8.37 and provisionally qualifying for nationals. She broke the record of 8.44 set by graduate student Lauren Koppel (Southside/Rockville Center) at last weekend’s NYSCTC Championships. Dewart stands 14th nationally in the hurdles.

Dewart also placed third in the high jump at 1.63 meters (5-4 ¼”) and ninth in the long jump at 5.22 meters (17-1 2/2”).

Junior Marcia McCord (Rancocas Valley/Mount Holly, N.J.) won the 400-meter dash at 57.67, her fastest time of the season and a NCAA provisional qualifying time. She ranks 14th in the nation in the event.

Senior Sarah Moskey (Berlin/Berlin, Conn.) was runner-up in the 1,000-meter run at 3:04.70.

Ithaca’s 3,200-meter relay team also picked up all-ECAC honors by placing seventh at 9:44.54.

Seniors Melanie McCormick (Champlain Valley Union/Williston, Vt.) and Amanda Boccio  (Guilderland/Albany) both competed in the 3,000-meter run. Boccio placed 12th at 10:41.98 with McCormick 22nd at 11:01.63.

Other Bombers in action included sophomore Heidi Baumbach (Lake Placid/Lake Placid) in the mile run (ninth, 5:12.51), freshman Jenn Randall (Cincinnatus Central/Cincinnatus) in the 800-meter run (11th, 2:19.26), freshman Meghan Shanley (Contestoga/Berwyn, Pa.) in the 1,000-meter run (3:09.19) and freshman Amanda Rissmeyer (Watchung/Millington, N.J.) in the high jump (14th, 1.58 meters).

Ithaca’s other indoor ECAC title came in 1989. The team has also won four outdoor titles.
