Empire 8 Announces 2010 Women's Lacrosse All-Conference Team

ROCHESTER, NY – The Empire 8 announced its 2010 Women’s Lacrosse All-Conference team with senior attack Alyssa Pigott of Stevens Institute of Technology repeating as Player of the Year and sophomore Shelby Barbay of Utica College being selected as Goalkeeper of the Year.

Pigott, named to the all-conference first team for the third consecutive year, leads the Empire 8 in goals (51), points (69), points per game (4.60 per game), and is tied for the lead in game-winning goals with four.  She has 34 draw controls, 24 ground balls, and 15 caused turnovers.

Barbay has posted a .508 save percentage, ranking second in the conference with 155 saves and 11.92 saves per game.  In Empire 8 play, she leads all goalkeepers with a .527 save percentage and 13.62 saves per game.

Three players from Ithaca College, the top seed and host of the upcoming Empire 8 Women’s Lacrosse Championship, were named to the all-conference first team.  Junior attack Katie Hurley has recorded 44 points on 32 goals and 12 assists, contributing 21 draw controls.  Sophomore defender Siobhan Sullivan has registered 20 ground balls, 20 draw controls, and 14 caused turnovers.  First-year midfielder Michelle Avery has scored 13 goals and added 19 draw controls.

Two more players from Stevens joined Pigott on the first team.  Junior midfielder Christine Smith, who repeated first-team honors, has scored 35 goals and leads the conference with 65 draw controls.  Like Smith, junior defender Kate Cox also garnered first-team honors for the third consecutive year and has recorded 48 ground balls and 29 caused turnovers.

Shelby Vakiener of Rochester Institute of Technology was named Empire 8 Rookie of the Year and earned first-team accolades.  The midfielder leads the conference with 53 ground balls and has added 41 goals, 35 draw controls, and 25 caused turnovers.  Sophomore defender Megan Henriksen of the Tigers was also named to the all-conference first team, contributing 30 ground balls, 28 draw controls, and 18 caused turnovers.

Senior midfielder Lauren Glavin of St. John Fisher College received first-team all-conference recognition for the third time.  She ranks second in the conference with 66 points on 45 goals and 21 assists.  She ranks second in points per game and third in goals.

Junior defender Sarah McCaskill and junior attack Michelle Cook represent Nazareth College on the all-conference first team.  McCaskill has registered 24 ground balls and 19 caused turnovers, while Cook has recorded 51 points on 32 points and 19 assists.

Karen Hollands was named Empire 8 Coach of the Year for leading Ithaca to a 7-1 mark in conference play and the top seed in the conference tournament.

One member of each team was named that institution’s representative on the 2010 Women’s Lacrosse Sportswoman of the Year Team.  Empire 8 emphasizes that "Competing with Honor and Integrity" is an essential component of a student-athlete’s experience in conjunction with an institution’s educational mission. These honorees have distinguished themselves and consistently exhibit the critical traits as outstanding sportswomen.
