Stevens Women's Swimming Finishes 12th at NCAA Championship
HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 21, 2010) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women’s swimming program placed 12th in the nation at the NCAA’s last week – the second top-15 finish in the last two years. Seniors Gabrielle Czernik and Stephanie Miller, junior Laura Barito, sophomores Sian Pearson and Hayley Hatfield, and freshman Marissa Douglas all competed at the national championships and helped earn the team to a total of 82 points.
Day 1
Barito carded a 23.23 in the 50-yard freestyle which was good for fourth place. Her time was also good for a new school-record and 15 team points. The fourth-place finish also meant she earned All-America accolades in the 50-free for the second time in as many years.
The 200-yard medley relay team of Czernik, Douglas, Miller, and Barito took 15th overall with a time of 1:47.93. The finish was good for four team points.
Day 2
The 200-yard freestyle relay team placed 13th overall while the 400-yard medley relay squad took 15th. Hatfield, Czernik, Miller, and Barito carded a 1:36.80 in the 200-free relay and was good for honorable mention All-America honors. In the 400-medley relay, Czernik, Douglas, Barito and Hatfield combined to finish with a time of 3:55.70. The two finishes netted the team a total of 12 points.
Day 3
Barito, Hatfield, Douglas, and Pearson combined to crush the school-record in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The group turned in a 7:36.86 and took 10th place. The four athletes all earned honorable mention All-America honors for their performance.
Day 4
The final day of competition may have been the best as Barito carded a 51.14 in the 100-free. Her time was good for sixth overall and it was her second-top-eight finish of the championships. Then, Hatfield, Douglas, Pearson, and Barito teamed to take seventh in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The group turned in a 3:29.24, earned 24 team points, and All-America honors.
