Ithaca Captures 18th Women's Outdoor Track and Field State Championship
TROY, N.Y.-The women's track & field team finished the New York State Collegiate Track Conference (NYSCTC) Championships with 274 points, more than 100 points ahead of every other team. The Bombers' outdoor state title was the 18th in program history. Sophomore Emma Dewart (Barker/Barker)--who won five events at the meet--was named Outstanding Performer in the field events. Head coach Jennifer Potter was named Coach of the Year.
After having already won state titles in the heptathlon and long jump, Dewart won the 100-meter hurdles, 200-meter dash and high jump Saturday. In the hurdles, she led an Ithaca sweep of the top three places. She ran 14.81, with graduate student Lauren Koppel (Southside/Rockville Center) second at 15.07 and freshman Tammia Hubbard (Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep/San Francisco, Calif.) third at 15.39. Dewart currently ranks seventh nationally in the event, while Koppel and Hubbard have qualified for the ECAC Championships.
Dewart ran a personal best 25.78 to take first in the 200-meter dash and qualify for ECAC's.
In the high jump, Dewart won by clearing 1.63 meters with freshman Amanda Rissmeyer (Watchung/Millington, N.J.) third at 1.58 meters. Both surpassed the ECAC standard.
Dewart was also a member of Ithaca's second-place 400-meter relay team that ran an ECAC-caliber 50.32. She was joined by junior Marcia McCord (Rancocas Valley/Mount Holly, N.J.), sophomore Hannah Evans (Media/Media, Pa.) and freshman Chelsea Gallup (Trumansburg/Trumansburg).
Ithaca's third-place 1,600-meter relay squad of sophomore Rebecca Coffman (Indian Hills/Franklin Lakes, N.J.) and freshmen Ebonie Howard (North Country Union/North Troy, Vt.), Jenn Randall (Cincinnatus Central/Cincinnatus) and Meghan Shanley (Conestoga/Berwyn, Pa.) also qualified for ECAC's. The quartet ran 4:02.94.
Junior Kate Leugers (Rice Memorial/Richmond, Vt.) won a pair of events Saturday. She took the 5,000-meter run at 18:18.86 and the 1,500-meter run at 4:41.35. Both were ECAC-qualifying marks. In the 1,500, Randall placed second and also qualified for ECAC's at 4:42.79.
The Bombers took the first two spots in the 800-meter run, with senior Sarah Moskey (Berlin/Berlin, Conn.) first at 2:20.83 and Randall second at 2:21.22.
