Nazareth Opens its Conference Play With Shutout of Alfred
ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Four different players scored for host Nazareth Wednesday at Golden Flyer Stadium as the Golden Flyers opened their Empire 8 Conference schedule in successful fashion with a 4-0 victory over Alfred in women's soccer.
The Golden Flyers improved to 3-2 overall, while Alfred dropped to 2-1-1 overall and 0-1-1 in conference games.
Nazareth had a 43-5 advantage in shots and scored two goals in each half. Sophomore Katie Wyant contributed one goal and one assist, while senior Erica Conte, junior Chelsea Rinere and freshman Olivia Derleth also scored.
Conte scored her first goal of the season and 18th of her career in the 17th minute after she gathered a loose ball inside the penalty area and fired a shot past Alfred keeper Shanna Ewoldt.
The score went unchanged until the closing minute of the first half as Rinere netted her first goal of the season. off a rebound of a shot by freshman Kaile Bushey.
In the second half, Derleth used a her speed on the right wing to score her second goal of the season as she sprinted into the penalty area to finish a cross from Wyant.
Wyant closed out the scoring with her first career goal off a pass from freshman Julia Teran Pulford.
Senior goalie Hillary Simon played all 90 minutes and had four saves for her first shutout of the season and 16th of her career. Ewoldt had a strong game for the Saxons with 18 saves.
