HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 18, 2010) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women’s tennis team scored their second Empire 8 victory of the season, defeating visiting Alfred University, 9-0, on the Stevens Tennis Courts in Hoboken, N.J. With the win, the Ducks improve to 5-1 on the year with a 2-1 league ledger, while the Saxons fall to 2-4 on the season with a 1-3 record against conference opponents.

Stevens’ senior Kendra Appleheimer and freshman Lisa Tessitore opened up doubles play with an 8-1 victory over juniors Kate Cohen (Bradford, Pa.) and Shannon Tovey (Chester, Conn.) at No. 2 doubles, before the Ducks’ Morgan Scalzi and Mine Bese scored an 8-1 triumph over Alfred sophomores Catherine Spencer (Homer, N.Y.) and Devyn DeVantier (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) in the third slot. Stevens’ Allyson Kingman and Nicole Portner headlined the Ducks’ doubles pairings with an 8-3 victory at No. 1 doubles.

Tessitore would outlast Saxon junior Griffin Currie (Erie, Pa.) in first singles, 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (10-5), while Kingman handled senior Autumn McLain (Oneida, N.Y.), 6-0, 6-1, in second singles. Appleheimer bested Cohen, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 3 singles, while Portner downed Tovey, 6-0, 6-4 in the fourth spot. Bese swept Spencer, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5 singles, with Stevens’ Alexandra Handel defeating Rebecca Switzer (Seneca Falls, N.Y.). 6-2, 6-1 in sixth singles.
