W&J Opens Empire 8 Season with 3-1 Victory at Hartwick
ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Sophomore forward Jennifer Marabella (Sinking Spring, Pa./Holy Name) netted the first two goals of the match and Washington & Jefferson opened Empire 8 Conference play with a 3-1 field hockey victory over Hartwick on Saturday afternoon.
The Presidents (4-1, 1-0 E8) dominated the match with a 26-4 shot advantage and a 16-2 edge in penalty corners.
Marabella struck first three minutes into the match after Marabella stuffed home the rebound off senior forward Kim Marcius' (North Huntington, Pa./Norwin) shot. Marabella made it a 2-0 game two minutes before halftime when she deflected home a cross from Marcius.
The lead grew to three goals midway through the second half on freshman forward Alexandra Kania's (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) goal. Sophomore Erin Barno (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) provided the assist.
Hartwick narrowed the gap to 3-1 with just over two minutes remaining, but the Presidents' defense and junior goalie Shleby Colyer (Oxford, Ohio/Talawanda) held on for the victory. Colyer finished with a pair of saves.
