The St. John Fisher College women's golf team earned second place at the William Smith Invitational held at Clifton Springs Country Club this weekend.
The Cardinals combined for a team score of 758 (381-377) on the weekend, trailing only Ithaca, who combined for a 726.
Alex Battle led all golfers at the Invitational, finishing with a 158 on the weekend (80-78). The junior narrowly defeated Michelle Van Slyke of Nazareth, who finished just one stroke greater than Battle. Van Slyke held the first round lead with a 79 with Battle one stroke back. Van Slyke went out in one of the day's first groups and turned in an 80 for a 36-hole score of 159. Battle, who played in the final group of the tournament, produced a 78 to win by a single stroke. She played the final nine holes in 38, including a pair of birdies, for the lowest score of the weekend on the stretch run.
Jackie Norwark was among the top-five golfers at the Invitational, finishing fourth with a 171 (83-88), +27.
Katie Joslyn ranked 19th in individual play, combining for an even 200 on the scorecard at the end of play, while Katie Fandrich rounded the Cardinals out at 26th, shooting a 122 on Saturday and a 107 Sunday for a 229 overall.
