Utica Men's Soccer Ranked 10th in Region

Utica, N.Y. 9/28/2010 – The Utica College men’s soccer team was ranked No. 10 in the most recent  NSCAA/Hendrickcars.com Division III East Region rankings released Tuesday. UC held strong in the 10th spot after entering the polls for the first time since 2007 last week. The Pioneers are off to their best start in program history with a 7-1 overall record, and they are currently riding the highs of a seven game win streak. On Saturday night, they defeated Alfred 6-0 in Empire 8 conference play.

Utica is led by senior Roberto Sgueglia, who has eight goals and six assists on the season. He currently leads the conference in points (22), goals, game-winning goals (four), and assists.

Freshman goalkeeper Anthony Caruso has also come on strong for the Pioneers, logging 476:49 minutes, allowing just four goals which ranks him third in the Empire 8 with a 0.76 goals against average. He has 16 saves on the season, which ties him for fourth with a .800 save percentage. He has posted one shutout for Utica and has a 6-0 record in his first six collegiate starts.

The men’s soccer team is ranked first in the Empire 8 in shots (180), points (77), goals (29), goals per game (3.62), and assists (19). They rank second in assists per game (2.38), and the Pioneer’s rank fourth in goals allowed, allowing just 1.12 goals per game.
