St. John Fisher Earns Victory over Hartwick in Final Seconds
Two free throws from Stephanie Sweeney with four seconds left in regulation stole the win, as Fisher narrowly defeated host Hartwick 67-66 in Oneonta this afternoon.
With the win, Fisher improves to 3-3 in Empire 8 play and 6-9 overall.
Hartwick took a 38-32 lead into the locker room at the half after holding just around a five-point lead for the entire first half.
The Cardinals earned the first two points of the opening stanza on a lay-up from Colleen Maloney, but did not hold the lead again until the final 2:44 minutes of the game, when Maloney nailed her second 3-point field goal of the game to break a tie and take a 65-62 lead.
The Hawks cut that lead to one on a jumper by Fritzi Flores before taking their final lead on a layup by Samantha Fox with nine seconds left to play.
Bonny Gardner would commit a foul resulting in a missed free throw, enabling Sweeney to grab the rebound before getting fouled herself, setting up the victory.
Maloney led the Cardinals with 24 points, while Meghan Soja added 14 and Sweeney chipped in with 10. Gardner led Fisher with a team-best seven rebounds.
