The St. John Fisher College women’s basketball team overcame a 13-point halftime deficit, thanks to a 25-3 run, and rallied to defeat visiting Rochester Institute of Technology 76-63 on Saturday afternoon at Fisher’s Manning & Napier Varsity Gym.
Fisher (8-9 overall, 5-3 Empire 8 Conference) led 15-11 eight minutes into the game, but R.I.T. (3-13, 1-6) went on a 14-2 run over the next four minutes to take the lead and enjoyed a 42-29 lead at the half.
The Tigers led 45-36 with 16:25 left in the game after a 3-pointer from Anna Waphshare, but Fisher came storming back.
The Cardinals went on a 14-0 run, highlighted by back-to-back 3-point plays from freshman Camaryn Buckner. After knocking down a 21-footer from the top of the key, Buckner gave her team the lead for good with a traditional 3-point-play with 13:38 remaining.
The Tigers trimmed Fisher’s 50-45 advantage down to two points at 50-48 with 11:11 left, but the Cardinals scored the game’s next 11 points to take a 61-48 lead on a layup from Amanda Lax with 7:33 left and never looked back.
Stephanie Sweeney led the Cardinals with a season-high 17 points. She also dished out six assists.
Buckner finished with 16 points and 14 rebounds (both career highs).
Freshman Lauren Gustin and Lax each scored 10 points. It was her third career double-double.
