McCord Provisionally Qualifies for NCAAs, Ithaca Competes at Cornell

Ithaca, N.Y. – Senior Marcia McCord (Rancocas Valley/Mount Holly, N.J.) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships with a fourth-place mark of 11.29 meters in the triple jump to lead the Bombers’ women’s track & field team on Saturday at the Cornell Upstate Challenge.

Ithaca saw a number of athletes meet ECAC and NYSCTC “A” and “B” standards during the meet. In addition to her triple jump performance, McCord ran to an ECAC qualifying time of 59.52 in the 400-meter dash to place second, while sophomore Emily McCune (Pinkerton Academy/Hempstead, N.H.) finished ninth in 1:05.66.

Also on the track, senior Kate Leugers (Rice Memorial/Richmond, Vt.) qualified for the ECAC Indoor Championships with a 3:04.02 finish in the 1,000 run. Placing fourth, Leugers was one of five Bombers to finish in the top 10 of the event. Freshman Jodi Robinson (Rush/Rush-Henrietta) and sophomore Carly Graham (West Genesee/Syracuse) both hit the state “B” standard. Robinson placed sixth in 3:17.29 and Graham seventh in 3:17.92. Freshman Mikayla Gaspary (Malta/Ballston Spa) was eighth in 3:26.60 and sophomore Annmarie Charno (Plainedge/Seaford) ninth clocking in at 3:26.97.

Senior Kristen DeStefano (Boiceville/Onteora) placed ninth and sophomore Tammia Hubbard (Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep/San Francisco, Calif.) 10th in the 60 hurdles with times of 9.94 and 9.97, respectively.

The 200 dash and 3,000 run each featured a pair of Bombers meeting the NYSCTC “B” standard. Freshman Martyann Chromik (Naugatuck/Naugatuck, Conn.) finished the sprint in 28.33 and DeStefano in 28.41. Graduate student Melanie McCormick (Champlain Valley Union/Williston, Vt.) ran the 3K in 11:02.09 followed by graduate student Alicia Burillo in 11:14.44.

Ithaca saw a number of top performances in the throwing circle. Junior Jessica Hoeffner (Hauppauge/Hauppauge) led the Bombers placing seventh in both the shot and weight throws. She met the NYSCTC “A” standard in the shot with a mark of 10.56 meters and the “B” standard in the weight with a heave of 12.95 meters.

Three other Bombers placed in the top-10 of the weight, all meeting that same “B” standard. Senior Katie Middleton (Pinkerton Academy/Derry, N.H.) finished eighth with a throw of 12.79 meters, sophomore Colleen Garman (Seymour/Seymour, Conn.) ninth with a mark of 11.23 meters and freshman Elaine Abdulky (Ithaca/Ithaca) 10th with a 10.70-meter throw.

Garman also finished eighth in the shot, and Middleton ninth, with throws of 10.15 and 9.91, respectively, to both meet the state “B” standard.

Joining McCord placing in the triple jump was senior Lindsay Johnston (Jonathan Law/Milford, Ct.). She finished 11th with a jump of 10.23 meters to meet the state “B” mark.

DeStefano again hit the state “A” standard in the pole vault with a ninth-place clear of 3.15 meters, while Dewart again qualifyied for the ECAC meet in the high jump. She cleared 1.60 meters and finished fourth on a judge’s decision with the jump. Sophomore Amanda Rissmeyer (Watchung/Millington, N.J.) followed in fifth place with a state “A” qualifying clear of 1.55 meters.
