Bombers Cruise To 51-Point Women's Basketball Win Over Alfred
ITHACA, N.Y. -- The women's basketball team (7-5, 3-0 Empire 8) remained atop the Empire 8 standings, hammering Alfred (4-6, 0-2 Empire 8) 93-42 Friday. Junior guard Riley Dunn (Central Catholic/Bradford, Mass.) scored a career-high 17 points and the Bombers forced 31 Saxon turnovers.
The Bombers held Alfred to 26.4 percent shooting from the floor and didn't give up a point in the first five minutes of either half. The Saxons made just 14 baskets and their 31 turnovers (including a pair of shot-clock violations) led to 36 Ithaca points.
All 13 Bombers who played scored at least two points, led by Dunn, who made four second-half three-point baskets and finished with career-high totals of three steals and two assists as well. Senior Jordan Confessore (South Brunswick/Kendall Park, N.J.) scored 11 points -- her third straight double-digit performance off the bench -- with senior forward Elissa Klie (Ramapo/Wyckoff, N.J.) and sophomore center Devin Shea (St. Basil Academy/Huntingdon, Pa.) adding 10 points apiece.
The Bombers scored the game's first 11 points and after a 13-5 Saxon run cut their lead to five, they ran off 17 of the next 19 points to take control for good. A 16-0 run opened the second half for Ithaca.
Junior guard Jessica Farley (Pine Valley Central/South Dayton) collected nine points and four assists. Sophomore forward Liz Conti (Algonquin Regional/Southboro, MAss.) recorded career-best totals of eight points, seven rebounds and two steals with freshman guard Jennifer Escobedo (Norwich Free Academy/Lisbon, Conn.) adding eight points as well. Freshman Elisabeth Wentlent (Greene/Greene) pulled down a career-high six rebounds, one behind Conti's team-leading total.
The Bombers' win was their 33rd in a row over Alfred (they lead the all-time series with the Saxons 43-4) and stretched their Empire 8 winning streak to 21.
