Presidents Stop St. John Fisher 7-1 for Second Conference Victory
ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Washington and Jefferson College fell behind 1-0 early, but rallied with six goals in the opening 35 minutes to roll past St. John Fisher 7-1 in Empire 8 Conference field hockey action on Saturday.
The Presidents (6-1, 2-1 E8) received two-goal efforts from juniors Erin Barno (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) and Jennifer Marabella (Sinking Spring, Pa./Holy Name).
Caitlin Allen gave the Cardinals (1-8, 0-3 E8), who are competing in their first varsity season, the early lead off a pass from Stacie Skidmore six minutes in.
W&J dominated from that point; however, starting with junior Arielle King’s (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) goal on a rebound at the 13:34 mark. Barno zipped a pass to junior Amanda Pflumm (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River) for a goal just under three minutes later to give W&J the lead for good.
Marabella found the back of the net off a feed from King with 10 minutes left in the half and Barno struck three minutes later for a 4-1 lead. Barno wasted little time in upping the advantage to four goals four minutes later. Senior Hannah Lott (Aspers, Pa./Biglerville) ended the first half scoring on a penalty corner rebound as time expired in the opening half.
Marabella notched the only goal of the second half with a goal six minutes in. W&J outshot SJF by a 20-8 margin and received two saves from sophomore Harley Straub (Richfield, Pa./East Juniata).
