Ithaca Men's Soccer Wins OT-Thriller
ITHACA, N.Y. - The Ithaca men's soccer team (4-5-1) scored the game-winning goal in the 120th minute in a 1-0 victory over Hamilton (3-6-1) on Tuesday evening at Carp Wood Field. Freshman forward Zach Hutchinson (Hopkinton/Hopkinton, Mass.) slid to the ground at the right edge of the penalty area and lifted a shot over the oncoming Hamilton goalkeeper for the game-winner, and just 20 seconds showed on the scoreboard clock in the second of two overtime periods.
Freshman midfielder Tim Goldman (Manlius-Pebble Hill/Fayetteville) assisted on the game-winning goal. It was the second game in a row that Hutchinson has scored a goal, and he is now tied for the team lead with two goals.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jack Van Adelsberg (Lower Merion/Bala Cynwyd, Pa.) made his third start of the season and earned his first collegiate victory and first-career shutout. He had five saves in the game, four of which came in the first half. That included a diving stop in the sixth minute off of Hamilton's best scoring opportunity, a hard shot toward the left post from 12 yards out.
Ithaca was outshot 11-3 in the first half, but controlled play for the rest of the game. The Bombers held an 11-5 advantage in shots in the second half, and took eight shots in overtime and yielded none to the Continentals. Ithaca also had a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
These teams played to a scoreless tie in the last meeting at Carp Wood Field in 2009, and it appeared headed for a similar result until Hutchinson's late game-winner. Ithaca now leads the all-time series 12-9-4.
