Stecyk's Goal Lifts Stevens over Merchant Marine Academy
KING’S POINT, N.Y. (October 12, 2011) – Sophomore Curtis Stecyk (Boulder, Colo.) snapped a 1-1 tie with 10 minutes remaining to give the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s soccer team a win over the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on Wednesday night. The sophomore sent a rocket from 30 yards out to tally the unassisted goal. Anthony Roden (Red Creek, N.Y.) also notched an unassisted goal for Stevens (10-2).
The Ducks were able to get on the board 19 minutes into the game, as a shot in the box from Zach Bowman (La Plata, Md.) in the box hopped off the King’s Point goaltender and bounced to Roden. The Red Creek, N.Y. native was able to bury the rebound and give the visitors the early 1-0 edge.
Stevens would carry that advantage into halftime, dominating the shots taken (11-4) and also leading 3-1 in corner kicks.
The second half was a much tighter contest, with the shots just 4-3 in favor of Stevens and corners even at two apiece.
The Mariners broke through the Stevens defense at 67:59, with Josh Reicks (Katy, Texas) setting up Andrew Mackenzie (San Diego, Calif.) for the score that knotted the game at 1.
In the 78th minute, Stecyk took matters into his own hands, sending a tracer screaming into the upper reaches of the goal from 30 yards out. It was a near-perfect strike and gave Stevens the lead again for good.
